A careful Adyen and Shopify build

Shopify Adyen Integration, Set Up Once and Checked Properly

A Shopify Adyen integration is available only to organisations with an existing Adyen approval, and Checkout Extensibility must be set up first. You sync payment methods from your Adyen Customer Area, activate the app, and configure live settings separately because test settings are not copied. Capture can be automatic, manual or on fulfilment. Some merchant sites claim Enterprise only. We verify and configure, from $390.

  • Eligibility and plan requirements confirmed
  • Payment method sync and live configuration
  • Capture mode and local methods tested
  • Test log and a recorded handover

Who this is for

Shopify Adyen Integration: Who It Helps Most

Adyen on Shopify has strict eligibility and a two-stage setup. These are the cases we build for.

You are a good fit if
  • Your orders come through Shopify
  • Adyen is, or will be, in your toolset
  • You would rather pay once than by the hour
  • You can review a test run with us
  • Enterprise merchants

Only organisations with an existing Adyen approval can activate it.

  • Teams with local methods

Local methods need the Adyen Payments - Credit Cards app as primary.

  • Teams syncing methods

A sync pulls methods from the Adyen Customer Area into Shopify.

  • Teams going live

Test settings are not copied to the live account.

  • Teams choosing capture

Automatic, manual or capture on fulfilment is chosen under Payments.

  • Teams reading blogs

Some guides describe a single API key that does not match the app flow.

Problems solved

Shopify Adyen Integration: Six Faults We Fix First

Adyen setups fail on eligibility and live config. These are the six faults we fix.

The problem

Not approved

The outcome

Activation is impossible. We check first.

The problem

Test config only

The outcome

Live payments fail. We configure live.

The problem

Methods unsynced

The outcome

Checkout lacks options. We run the sync.

The problem

Wrong capture

The outcome

Funds are late. We choose deliberately.

The problem

Shopify Payments disabled unaware

The outcome

Revenue stops. We confirm the claim.

The problem

No handover

The outcome

Setup is unwritten. We document it.

What we connect and check

What Happens When a payment is authorised: The Adyen Flow

See the build as a short chain: event, check, write, log. Each link is tested on its own and again as a whole, with real orders, before we ask you to approve anything.

Process and timeline

Six Stages From Brief to Live Adyen Sync

A fixed order of work keeps the project predictable. You know what happens next at every point.

  1. 1

    Brief and scope

First we find out what you sell, how your team uses Adyen and which events count. A quick look at your orders and payments tells us where to begin and what to avoid.

  2. 2

    Access and connection

We ask for the smallest access that works, via an API key with restricted permissions. A live read confirms it before we build on top of it.

  3. 3

    Map and rule

Psp reference, merchant reference, currency and amount are matched across both tools, and we record who wins each conflict and how blanks are treated.

  4. 4

    Build in a copy

We build against test data, not your live records, and show you the plan and a recorded run where it helps.

  5. 5

    Test on real cases

Cases tested: an authorisation, a capture and a partial refund, plus refunds and edits. Every result is compared with Shopify's own figures.

  6. 6

    Go live and hand over

Once you approve, we switch the flow on, watch the first runs and hand over notes, a diagram and a short recorded tour.

Inside every project

Six Safeguards Built Into Every Adyen Integration

None of these costs extra. They are simply how we work.

Narrow access, in your name

Access is as narrow as possible, granted through an API key with restricted permissions, and every account remains yours.

Failures raise a flag

A named person receives an alert, with the order and the reason, whenever a run fails.

Build in a copy, never live

We never build on live data: the flow is tested on test records and your real orders and payments wait for your approval.

Nothing sent without approval

Emails, texts and posts that reach customers are approved by you before they are enabled.

Plain scope, two revision rounds

You see the price before paying. Changes within scope go through two structured rounds, so a tweak never becomes an hourly invoice.

Counts compared, not assumed

Once data is loaded, we count both sides, so missing or doubled records show up early.

Choose your packageRequired

Choose the smallest package that covers your case. You can always add triggers or history from the extras list.

The essentials: Adyen connected, one flow built to record the authorisation against the order, tested end to end.

  • Adyen linked with an API key with restricted permissions
  • Trigger for the event: a payment is authorised
  • Mapping for psp reference, merchant reference and currency
  • Retries can never create a second record
  • Test on an authorisation and a capture
  • A log of the tests and a short recorded tour

The core set: Adyen will record the authorisation against the order; mark the order paid on capture; mirror the refund, protected by filters and retries.

  • Everything in Single Workflow
  • A trigger for each: a payment is authorised, a capture succeeds, a refund is issued
  • Mapping extended to amount and custom fields
  • Rules by tag, country and order value
  • Automatic retries with failure alerts
  • Test on an authorisation, a capture and a partial refund

Two-way sync with history loaded, a fortnight of monitoring and a runbook your team can follow.

  • Everything in Core Workflows
  • Both-way sync with a winner for each field
  • History load of previous payments
  • A fortnight of run checks after launch
  • A check of who can do what
  • Written runbook for your team

If your Adyen setup depends on custom code, a private API, an on-premise system or more than one store, send us a short brief and we will quote it as a fixed-price project.

What is your monthly order volume?Required

Volume decides how much load planning the build needs.

How should data flow between Shopify and Adyen?Required

Two-way sync needs conflict rules for every shared field.

What is already stored in Adyen?Required

Matching comes first, so nothing is duplicated.

How soon do you need it live?Required

Standard follows the schedule your other choices set. Pay to move up the queue and go live sooner.

Optional extrasOptional

Each one begins switched off. Turn on what you need, watch the total, switch it back off.

Why Store Design Expert

Why Owners Choose Our Shopify Adyen Integration Over Doing It Alone

Most of this job is clicking, and you could do it. People hire us because the unglamorous parts, ids, timing and edge cases, decide whether the connection helps or hurts.

Notes a colleague can follow

Our handover records what moves where and which settings were chosen, so a future developer will not have to guess.

We live inside Shopify

We work with Shopify orders, refunds, edits and metafields daily. That depth is separate from knowing Adyen's interface.

Safety designed in

Retries, alerts, unique keys and limited access come as standard in every build.

A direct line to the builder

You message the person who has your flow open. Questions about a trigger or a field get a straight answer.

Experience since 2015

We have launched more than 450 Shopify stores since 2015 and met most of the quirks that trip up integrations.

4.9+ from verified clients

Reviews on this page come from verified Store Design Expert clients, so you can see how projects went before paying.

What we need to get started

Getting Started: What We Ask For

The list is short. Most owners have everything ready in a day.

Approve a collaborator request

If the store is live, send us its address and approve our request. Ownership stays with you, our role is limited, and removal takes one click.

Starting from nothing? We build first

We can start in our own Partner account, set up the store and the Adyen link, then transfer ownership to you. A Shopify plan is chosen at the end.

Or share a staff login

Sharing a staff login is possible. The collaborator route is safer, though: one click removes it and no password is passed around.

Your Adyen access

Either create the Adyen account yourself and add us, or we open it with your email. You remain the owner, and we work through an API key with restricted permissions.

Sample records

Tell us where typical records live, or send a handful from each system. Real examples beat assumptions.

A decision-maker

Who signs off the plan and the test? And when Adyen and Shopify disagree, which one is right? Those two answers are all we need.

We never need your owner password or payment details. Access is limited, logged and removable at any time.

FAQ

Questions About Adyen and Shopify Integration

Answers on cost, timing, access, data and what to do when the connection misbehaves.

How much does Shopify Adyen integration cost?

Single Workflow costs $690, Core Workflows $1390 and Full Integration $2690. Order volume, data direction, existing Adyen data and add-ons change the total, and the calculator shows it before you pay. Most projects land between about $690 and $3770, with delivery from 3 to 16 working days.

How long does the Adyen integration take?

Single Workflow takes 3 to 6 working days, Core Workflows 6 to 10 and Full Integration 9 to 16. The usual variables are how much history you want loaded and how quickly you approve the test results. The Sooner and Fastest options shorten the schedule when a launch date is fixed.

Who can use Adyen on Shopify?

Organisations with an existing Adyen approval. The same job is behind "shopify to adyen sync".

What must be set up first?

Checkout Extensibility. Related searches such as "adyen customer area sync shopify", the answer is the same.

How do methods get to Shopify?

By syncing from the Adyen Customer Area. You may also see it searched as "adyen shopify integration"; the work is the same.

Are test settings copied to live?

No. If you typed "shopify adyen plugin", you are in the right place.

Where is capture chosen?

Settings, Payments, Manage. Queries such as "adyen shopify app" lead to the same build.

Does it need Enterprise?

Merchant sites say so; unconfirmed. Related searches such as "shopify adyen partnership", the answer is the same.

Can you set it up?

Yes. People also search for "shopify adyen payments"; this page covers that too.
