Checkout and cart work
Cart changes are theme work. Changes to the hosted checkout itself are limited and depend on your plan.
Plans affect what a store can do, and some design jobs depend on them. This guide explains the differences that matter for design work, without quoting prices that change.
Shopify changes its plans and prices over time. A number printed here would soon be wrong.
Shopify sells several plans, from entry level up to Shopify Plus for large and complex stores. Names, prices, fees and included features change from time to time, so the only reliable source is Shopify's own pricing page. We never print plan prices or app fees, and every service page that depends on a plan says so.
What we can do is explain which differences matter for design and development work, so you know what to check before you order. In practice there are three: how much of checkout you can customize, how many staff accounts and locations you can have, and which advanced features are available to your store.
If you are unsure, tell us your plan on the brief. We will say plainly if a job needs a different plan or a different approach.
| Area | Why it matters for design | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Checkout customization | Shopify controls the hosted checkout. How far it can be changed depends on your plan. | Check Shopify's current checkout options before ordering checkout work |
| Staff and locations | More accounts and locations affect permissions and stock set-up. | Tell us how many you use in the brief |
| Advanced features | Some features, such as certain B2B and market tools, depend on plan level. | Ask us if a feature is plan-dependent |
| Apps | Some apps require a particular Shopify plan as well as their own plan. | Check the app provider's requirements |
For current plan names, prices and features, use Shopify's own pricing page.
Cart changes are theme work. Changes to the hosted checkout itself are limited and depend on your plan.
Multi-currency and multi-language set-up depend on available market features. See the multi-channel category.
Wholesale set-up depends on the tools your plan offers. The B2B service page notes this.
App set-up pages state when an app needs a particular plan on either side.
It is shown in your Shopify admin under settings and plan.
Pages note anything that depends on a plan or an app plan.
Add your plan name so the scope fits.

Plans are described in terms of features and fees. For design work, three differences matter most.
Shopify offers several plans, from entry-level plans for new stores to Shopify Plus for large and complex stores. We do not print plan names, prices or feature counts because they change. Use Shopify's pricing page for those. Here is how plan differences affect the work we do.
Checkout on Shopify is hosted and controlled by Shopify. On most plans, we cannot edit its code. Deeper checkout customization is generally part of the highest plan and is subject to Shopify's own rules. Changes to the cart page, which sits before checkout, are theme work and are not affected by this.
Plans differ in how many staff accounts and locations you can have. This matters if several people need to edit the store, or if you sell from more than one place. Collaborator access for an agency is separate from staff accounts, but your plan's rules still apply to what you can set up.
Some features, such as advanced reporting, market settings and wholesale tools, depend on the plan. If a job needs one of these, the service page says so, and your plan may need to change.
Apps have their own plans and fees, separate from your Shopify plan. Some apps require a particular Shopify plan. We show app plan details before payment and never state an app's price on its behalf.
If you are unsure what your plan allows, tell us your plan name in the brief. We will say plainly if a job needs a different plan or a different approach.
The right plan matches where your store is today, with room for the next stage.
Plans scale with store size and sales volume. Start where you are and move up as you grow.
Count the people who will edit the store, and compare that with each plan's staff limits.
International selling features differ by plan. Check what is available for your markets.
Fees depend on the plan and the payment provider. Compare the total cost at your expected sales.
Some wholesale features depend on the plan. Check before you build around them.
Plans can be changed as your needs change, so you do not need to predict the future.
Changing plans is common. The question is whether the change pays for itself.
Because we do not quote plan prices, any figure you read about plan costs should come from Shopify directly. Treat third-party articles on plan prices with caution, because they age quickly.
A quick map from question to source.

| Can you design for my plan? | The service page and your brief | We say if a job needs a different plan |
| Does this app need a particular plan? | The app's page | Each app sets its own requirements |
| Can checkout be customized? | Shopify's documentation | Checkout is controlled by Shopify |
| Should I move to Plus? | A consultation | It depends on size and needs |
