Shopify to Payload, built by specialists

Shopify Webhook Payload, Mapped Field by Field and Tested on Real Orders

Shopify webhook payload handling starts with verification: read the raw body unparsed, compute HMAC-SHA256 with the shared secret, base64-encode it and compare to the X-Shopify-Hmac-SHA256 header in constant time. Use X-Shopify-Event-Id or Webhook-Id to deduplicate and make handlers idempotent. Express needs raw-body middleware. We build and test receivers, from $390.

  • Receiver verifying HMAC on the raw body
  • Deduplication by event or webhook ID
  • Fast acknowledgement with queued processing
  • Test log and a recorded handover

Our track record

450+ Shopify Stores Launched Since 2015. Your Payload Connection Gets the Same Care.

Any Payload and Shopify connection proves its worth only if the data is right on everyday orders. Through ten years of building stores, we have learned where orders, customers and products usually break an integration, and we design around it.

Who this is for

Six Situations Where Shopify Webhook Payload Pays Off

A webhook receiver must be safe, fast and repeatable. These are the cases we build for.

You are a good fit if
  • Your store runs on Shopify
  • You have, or will open, a Payload account
  • You want a fixed price and a written scope
  • You can share the access we ask for
  • Teams receiving orders

Every request is verified against the HMAC header.

  • Developers on Express

Raw-body middleware stops parsed JSON breaking the signature.

  • Teams with retries

Event and webhook IDs deduplicate repeated deliveries.

  • Teams with slow handlers

Acknowledge quickly and process in a queue.

  • Teams reading payloads

Topic, shop domain and API version headers route the request.

  • Teams copying GitHub code

Shopify uses base64, not hex, which trips many people.

Problems solved

Shopify Webhook Payload: Six Faults We Fix First

Webhook receivers fail on signatures and retries. These are the six faults we fix.

The problem

Parsed body hashed

The outcome

Signatures fail. We use the raw body.

The problem

The outcome

Valid calls are rejected. We compare base64.

The problem

Duplicate processing

The outcome

Retries run twice. We deduplicate.

The problem

Slow responses

The outcome

Deliveries time out. We queue.

The problem

Wrong secret

The outcome

All requests fail. We verify the source.

The problem

What is included

The Payload Integration Checklist, Group by Group

Deliverables fall into six groups. The package table below shows how much of each group a given price covers, so the difference between tiers is easy to judge.

Connection

  • Payload authorised with an API key with restricted permissions
  • No secrets in notes or chat
  • Who-can-do-what review
  • Live read confirmed before any build

Triggers

  • Rules by tag, country or order value
  • Event handled: a payment is received
  • Event handled: a refund is issued
  • Every trigger proven separately

Mapping

  • Mapping table in the handover notes
  • Who wins each field, in writing
  • Currency handled, including blanks
  • Formats agreed for order number and fee

Safety

  • Silent failures found by a daily check
  • Idempotent writes throughout
  • Alerts when a run fails
  • Retries update the record

Testing

  • Tested with a payment
  • Scenario tested: a refund
  • Early live runs observed
  • Edge cases: refunds and edits

Handover

  • Help with questions after go-live
  • Two rounds of changes included
  • Picture of what moves where
  • Settings documented in plain English

Your part is access, a brief and a decision on conflicts. Ours is the build, the test and the handover.

How the link works

Payload and Shopify: How the Connection Is Wired

All connections follow the same path. The store sends an event, we check it against what Payload already holds, the right record is written and the change is logged where your finance team can see it. The picture shows the pieces we connect and test before handover.

Process and timeline

How We Build Your Payload Integration, Step by Step

A fixed order of work keeps the project predictable. You know what happens next at every point.

  1. 1

    Brief and scope

We ask what you sell, how Payload is used and which events matter. A short review of your orders and payments shows where the flow should start and what it must never do.

  2. 2

    Access and connection

You approve narrow access to Shopify and Payload, using an API key with restricted permissions. We confirm the connection with a live read before building on it.

  3. 3

    Map and rule

The map covers charge id, order number, fee and currency; we put the conflict winners and blank rules in writing.

  4. 4

    Build in a copy

We build against test data, not your live records, and show you the plan and a recorded run where it helps.

  5. 5

    Test on real cases

We run a payment, a refund and an invoice payment, then refunds and edits, and verify each outcome against what the store shows.

  6. 6

    Go live and hand over

On your approval the flow is switched on and monitored through its first runs, and you receive notes, a diagram and a quick video tour.

How We Protect Your Orders and Customer Data

None of these costs extra. They are simply how we work.

Build in a copy, never live

Test data comes first. Live orders and payments are left alone until you sign off.

Secrets kept in a vault

Keys and tokens live in a secure vault, not in notes, spreadsheets or chat.

Failures raise a flag

A named person receives an alert, with the order and the reason, whenever a run fails.

A written definition of done

Done means the flow copes with a payment, a refund and an invoice payment, and the results are written in the log.

Counts compared, not assumed

We check totals against the source after each load, so mismatches surface straight away.

Plain scope, two revision rounds

You see the price before paying. Changes within scope go through two structured rounds, so a tweak never becomes an hourly invoice.

Each package goes deeper into Payload. Every option below shows its own price and any extra days, so nothing is sprung on you after checkout.

One flow live between Shopify and Payload: record the payment against the order, mapped and tested.

  • Payload linked with an API key with restricted permissions
  • One trigger built: when a payment is received
  • Field map covering charge id, order number and fee
  • Retries can never create a second record
  • Test on a payment and a refund
  • Test log and recorded handover

Payload will record the payment against the order, mirror the refund and mark the invoice paid, with filters, retries and a failure alert.

  • Everything in Single Workflow
  • A trigger for each: a payment is received, a refund is issued, an invoice is paid
  • Currency plus custom fields matched
  • Tag, country and value filters
  • Retries and failure alerts
  • Proven on a payment, a refund and an invoice payment

Two-way sync with history loaded, a fortnight of monitoring and a runbook your team can follow.

  • Everything in Core Workflows
  • Two-way updates with per-field winners
  • One-off history load of past payments
  • Two weeks of monitoring after go-live
  • A check of who can do what
  • Team runbook in plain English

If your Payload setup uses custom code, a private API, an on-premise system or more than one store, tell us about it and we will quote it as a fixed-price project.

Roughly how many orders do you take each month?Required

More orders means more queuing, throttling and testing.

How should data flow between Shopify and Payload?Required

Syncing both ways means a conflict rule for each shared field.

Are there existing records in Payload to deal with?Required

Matching comes first, so nothing is duplicated.

How soon do you need it live?Required

Standard follows the schedule your other choices set. Pay to move up the queue and go live sooner.

Optional extrasOptional

Each one begins switched off. Turn on what you need, watch the total, switch it back off.

Why Store Design Expert

What You Get From Us That a Template Does Not

Most of this job is clicking, and you could do it. People hire us because the unglamorous parts, ids, timing and edge cases, decide whether the connection helps or hurts.

A direct line to the builder

Ask the person who built it. Questions about triggers or fields get a direct reply.

A price you can plan around

The calculator shows the price and extra days for every package and option. Payload bills its own plan fees, so check its current pricing page.

Safety designed in

Retries, alerts, unique keys and limited access come as standard in every build.

Notes a colleague can follow

Our handover records what moves where and which settings were chosen, so a future developer will not have to guess.

Experience since 2015

More than 450 Shopify stores have passed through our hands, so we have met most of the quirks that interfere with integrations.

We live inside Shopify

Orders, refunds, edits and metafields are what we handle every day, which is a different skill from knowing Payload's menus.

What we need to get started

Getting Started: What We Ask For

The list is short. Most owners have everything ready in a day.

Approve a collaborator request

Selling already? Send the address and accept a collaborator request. You keep ownership, we get a limited role, and you can revoke it at any moment.

Starting from nothing? We build first

No store yet? We build it in our Partner account, connect Payload there and transfer the whole store to you, so you choose a plan only at the end.

Or share a staff login

A staff login works if that is easier. We still recommend the collaborator route, since it can be revoked in one click and leaves no password in circulation.

Your Payload access

Either create the Payload account yourself and add us, or we open it with your email. You remain the owner, and we work through an API key with restricted permissions.

Sample records

Share a few typical records from both tools, or point us to them. Real examples reveal how your data is really structured.

A decision-maker

Tell us who approves the plan and the test, and which rule should win when Payload and Shopify disagree.

We never need your owner password or payment details. Access is limited, logged and removable at any time.

FAQ

Questions About Payload and Shopify Integration

Answers on cost, timing, access, data and what to do when the connection misbehaves.

How much does Shopify webhook Payload cost?

Single Workflow costs $690, Core Workflows $1390 and Full Integration $2690. Order volume, data direction, existing Payload data and add-ons change the total, and the calculator shows it before you pay. Most projects land between about $690 and $3770, with delivery from 3 to 16 working days.

How long does the Payload integration take?

Single Workflow takes 3 to 6 working days, Core Workflows 6 to 10 and Full Integration 9 to 16. The usual variables are how much history you want loaded and how quickly you approve the test results. The Sooner and Fastest options shorten the schedule when a launch date is fixed.

How do I verify a webhook?

Compute HMAC-SHA256 of the raw body and compare to the header.

Is the signature hex or base64?

Base64. If you typed "shopify webhook hmac x-shopify-hmac-sha256", this is the page for it.

How do I deduplicate?

Use the event or webhook ID. Queries such as "shopify webhook payload example" lead to the same build.

Why use raw-body middleware?

Parsed JSON changes the bytes. The same service covers "shopify webhook payload types".

How long are retries?

One source says up to 48 hours; unverified. The same job is behind "shopify order webhook payload".

Where is the full payload schema?

In Shopify's current docs. The same job is behind "shopify product webhook payload".

Can you build it?

Yes. If you typed "shopify to payload sync", you are in the right place.
