Who this is for

Who Gets the Most From a Canonical Clean-Up

Duplicate pages rarely cause a crash. They cause a slow leak, with ranking power split between near-identical addresses. These are the shops that usually feel it first.

You are a good fit if
  • You can give us Search Console access
  • You are open to us editing a duplicate of your theme
  • You want a clear rule for each type of page
  • You would rather know the canonical fee before we begin
  • Owners puzzled by Search Console statuses

The indexing report lists hundreds of alternate pages and unselected canonicals, and you cannot tell which are harmless and which hide a real problem.

  • Stores with large filterable collections

Colour, size and price filters generate thousands of crawlable addresses. Google spends its visits on them and the pages you want indexed wait their turn.

  • Catalogues with many variants and bundles

Each option combination can be reached by its own address. Without clear rules, signals scatter across versions of the same product.

  • Brands selling in several markets

Languages, countries and domains multiply every page. Without matching hreflang and canonicals, markets compete against each other.

  • Stores running more than one SEO app

A theme and an app each print a canonical tag, or an app rewrites titles and links differently. The page ends up saying two things at once.

  • Dropshippers using supplier descriptions

Your product text is shared with hundreds of other shops. Canonical tags cannot fix that, but we can tell you which pages deserve rewriting first.

Problems solved

Where Shopify Duplicate Content Really Comes From

Shopify gives every product and collection more than one way to be reached. Most are harmless on their own. Together, and mixed with apps, they create the pattern Google calls duplicate content.

  1. Collection-scoped product addresses

A theme using the within filter links shoppers to /collections/name/products/handle. The canonical usually points to /products/handle, but internal links still send crawlers down the longer path.

  2. Two canonical tags on one page

Shopify's theme prints one, an SEO app adds another. When they disagree, Google ignores both and chooses for itself, which may not be the page you wanted.

  3. Parameters added by Shopify itself

Recommended products append values such as pr_prod_strat, and search results append _pos and _ss. Each one produces a crawlable address showing the same product again.

  4. Tag, vendor and type collections

Tag URLs, /collections/vendors and /collections/types listings can repeat the same products you already list elsewhere, with thin or identical content.

  5. Pagination and sort duplicates

Page one of a collection can load at two addresses, and sorted views repeat the same products in another order, so signals divide across them.

  6. Descriptions copied from suppliers

Even a perfect canonical setup cannot make identical supplier text unique. The risk is not a penalty but a page Google sees no reason to prefer.

What we can do

What Our Canonical Tags Work Covers

Setting a tag is the easy part. Deciding which page deserves to be canonical, and making every signal agree with that choice, is where the real work lies. These six capabilities are where we spend the time.

Shopify canonical issues and how to fix them, by page type

We fetch a sample of every template: product, collection, filtered collection, paginated collection, blog, article, page and search. We record the canonical each prints, then compare it with the one Google reports in the URL Inspection tool.

How to add canonical tag in Shopify the right way

Most themes print the tag from the canonical_url object in theme.liquid. We keep that route, remove duplicates and add conditional logic only where a template truly needs it, so future theme updates remain easy.

Shopify canonical URL and the internal links that must agree

A canonical is a hint, and links are the louder signal. We switch collection-scoped links to the product's own address in cards, search results, recommendations and menus, so every signal points the same way.

Shopify duplicate content rules for filters and tags

Each filter and tag pattern gets a decision: keep indexable, consolidate to the parent collection or keep out of the index. We implement it with meta robots logic and, where sensible, edits to robots.txt.liquid.

Markets, languages and domain variants

We check that every language or country version has a self-referencing canonical and matching hreflang, and that the myshopify.com address and domain variants do not serve a second copy.

Search Console recheck and a rule sheet

We map which Search Console statuses are healthy and which are not, request revalidation where it helps and hand over a sheet listing the rule for each page pattern and why it was chosen.

How We Set Up Shopify Canonical Tags and Remove Duplicates

Follow a canonical project from first crawl to verified result. Each page type is fetched and compared with the address Google selected, a rule is agreed for every pattern, the duplicate theme is patched, and a second crawl and Search Console recheck show that each page now names one preferred URL.

How We Run a Canonical and Duplicate Content Project

Six stages, all patched on a duplicate theme and published only when the tests pass. A Tag Audit and Patch usually takes 3 to 5 working days, and the calculator estimates larger stores.

  1. 1

    Crawl and sample every template

We crawl the store and fetch a sample of each page type, recording the canonical, the robots meta and the status code that each one returns.

  2. 2

    Compare with what Google chose

URL Inspection shows the canonical Google selected. Where it differs from yours, the gap tells us which signals are being overruled.

  3. 3

Decide a rule for each pattern

You approve a one-page plan: which pages stay indexable, which consolidate and which stay out of the index, with the reasoning.

  4. 4

    Patch the theme and links

The duplicate theme is edited so one canonical prints per page and internal links point to the preferred address.

  5. 5

    Re-crawl and compare

A second crawl shows the effect of the changes against the first, with each remaining duplicate explained.

  6. 6

    Revalidate and hand over

We request validation in Search Console where it applies and hand you the rule sheet, with a short video tour of the changes.

Safeguards Behind Every Theme Change We Make

Head tags decide what search engines index, so an error can hide pages for weeks. Every project follows the habits below, which is why the fixed price does not drift.

Duplicate theme for every edit

Nothing is changed in your live theme. We patch a copy, preview it and publish only after you approve the result.

Original head tags recorded first

Before editing, we save what each template printed, so any change can be compared with, or rolled back to, the original.

No page left without a canonical

After the patch, we check that each template prints exactly one absolute canonical, with no gaps and no pairs.

Index rules reviewed against blocked paths

A page blocked in robots.txt cannot show Google its noindex tag. We check that blocking and noindex rules never work against each other.

Plain-language reporting

You see each duplicate cluster, its cause and what we did, written in ordinary words, with technical detail in an appendix.

Fixed scope, two revision rounds

The rules in the agreed plan are delivered at the quoted price, with two rounds of changes before handover.

Why Store Design Expert

Why Stores Choose Us as Their Shopify SEO Expert

Many blog posts tell owners to paste a snippet into theme.liquid. We look at why Google is overruling your tag, and fix the signals that disagree with it.

Shopify only, since 2015

More than 450 Shopify stores launched means we know which theme files print which tags, and which apps rewrite them.

Evidence from Google, not guesses

URL Inspection shows the canonical Google picked. We use it to prove each fix has worked, not to assume it.

Clean Liquid that survives updates

We use Shopify's own objects and avoid hard-coded domains, so theme updates do not undo the work.

Priced below audit-only agencies

Audit-only engagements often cost $500 to $2,500 before any fix. Our fixed packages start at $390 and include implementation.

Honest about what canonicals cannot do

Canonicals do not fix thin or copied content. We tell you where rewriting is the real answer, without selling you a plugin.

You keep everything

Your store, your theme and your Search Console remain yours, with no ongoing fee or tool lock-in.

What we need to get started

What We Need to Start Your Canonical Fix

You do not need to crawl anything or touch your theme. We need a way into the store and a window into Google's view of it.

Approve our collaborator request

Send us your store address and accept our request. You stay the owner, we ask only for theme and settings permissions, and you can remove us at any time.

No store yet?

We build it in our own Shopify Partner account and transfer ownership when the work is finished, so you choose a plan only once everything is in place.

Or give us a staff account

A staff login made for us is also fine. We recommend collaborator access because it is simpler to revoke, but either works.

Search Console access

Add us as a user on your Search Console property, so we can read the indexing statuses and use URL Inspection for your pages.

A list of installed apps

Tell us which SEO, speed, translation and page builder apps you run, as these often decide what is printed in your page head.

Decisions and priorities

Tell us which pages matter most to revenue, who approves the indexing plan and whether a launch or sale is coming.

We never need your owner password, bank details or hosting logins. Your live theme stays untouched until you approve the preview.

FAQ

Shopify Canonical Tags and Duplicate Content FAQs

Short answers about cost, Search Console statuses, DIY fixes, what canonicals cannot do and how long Google takes to respond.

How much does Shopify canonical tags setup and duplicate content fix cost?

Packages start at $390 for Tag Audit and Patch, $790 for Duplicate Clean-Up and $1,490 for Index Control Overhaul. Catalogue size, the number of page types affected and how many apps touch your page head are priced in the calculator, so you see a fixed price first.

What is a canonical tag?

It is a line in a page's head that names the preferred address when the same content can be reached at several. Search engines use it as a strong hint about which version to index and rank, so signals combine rather than scatter.

How to add canonical tag in Shopify?

Most themes already print one from the canonical_url object in theme.liquid. Check by viewing a page's source and searching for rel canonical. If there are none, add the line. If there are two, an app is adding its own. We resolve it in a duplicate theme.

Is the alternate page with proper canonical tag status an error?

Usually not. It means Google found a duplicate address, read your canonical and chose to follow it. It is expected for collection-path and variant URLs. The statuses to investigate are duplicate without user-selected canonical and Google chose different canonical than user.

How to fix alternate page with proper canonical tag in Shopify when it matters?

First check the page listed is truly a duplicate. If so, change the internal links that point to it, so crawlers stop discovering it. If it should rank in its own right, it needs a self-referencing canonical and unique content. We sort which is which.

What are the most common Shopify canonical issues and how to fix them?

The usual four are collection-scoped product links, two canonical tags from the theme and an app, parameters on recommendation and search links, and filter or tag pages without rules. The fix is aligned canonicals, internal links and index rules, in that order.

How to fix canonical issue in Shopify myself?

Open a duplicate theme, search theme.liquid for canonical, make sure one tag prints using canonical_url and replace the within filter on product links. It is manageable for a simple theme. Stores with filters, apps or markets usually need expert checking.

Does Shopify duplicate content hurt rankings?

Google does not usually apply a penalty. The cost is diluted signals, wasted crawling and the wrong version ranking. On large catalogues that can hold back pages worth the most. The risk is higher when product text is copied from suppliers across many shops.

Why does my store have a Shopify duplicate page for every product?

Shopify can reach one product at /products/handle and also at /collections/name/products/handle. The canonical normally points to the first, but internal links, sitemaps and feeds using the second can lead Google to treat both as real pages.

Can you do an SEO URL check for Shopify?

Yes, it is the first step. We crawl your store and record, for each template, the status code, canonical, robots meta and redirects. We then compare it with Google's own selected canonical in URL Inspection, and list every mismatch with its cause.

How to improve SEO Shopify meta tags beyond canonicals?

Give every page a unique title and meta description, check that robots meta tags match your intent and make sure Open Graph tags do not conflict. Titles repeated across variants and filters are a common problem. We can add a pass for it as an extra.

Do I need a Shopify SEO expert, or are apps enough?

Apps can print tags, but they cannot decide which pages should rank or notice when two apps conflict. Hire a Shopify SEO expert when Search Console shows many duplicates, when you sell in several markets or when your theme is heavily customised.

Are your Shopify experts for hire on a fixed price?

Yes. The scope is agreed first and the price is fixed, including two revision rounds. If a store has more than 25,000 products or a headless front end we quote separately, again with scope in writing. There are no open hourly meters.

What kind of Shopify help for SEO do you not provide in this service?

This service covers duplicate URLs, canonicals and index control. It does not cover link building, ongoing content writing or keyword strategy. If your audit shows thin content as the real issue, we say so and point you to the right next step.
